Meet Akin James – one of the Open Call winners selected by the jury for AMSTERDAM MODESTAD!

Born in Curaçao and based in the Netherlands, Akin fuses streetwear, identity, storytelling, and cultural heritage in everything he creates. Since 2017, he’s been building his own fashion label and curating immersive events that blend art, music, and performance.

As a Black maker with Caribbean roots, Akin is passionate about amplifying underrepresented voices. For him, Amsterdam is a city of contrasts — a place where his vision on identity, migration, and self-expression comes alive.

His work captures the rebellious spirit of the city: raw, expressive, and deeply personal.

“In this piece, I highlight three iconic Amsterdam designers; Viktor & Rolf, Iris van Herpen, and Duran Lantink, who represent for me the past, present, and future of avant-garde fashion. They inspire those who dare to be different. For me, Amsterdam’s fashion scene is special because it’s a city where you can truly express yourself.”
